ABO Gear Jute Bone Dog Chew Toy Review
Today was an exciting day! The UPS guy was nice enough to drop off a big box of all kinds of goodies. In this review, we’ll talk a little about our experience with the ABO Gear Jute Bone Dog Chew Toy.

Here’s some basic information:
- 8 Layers - 96 oz. of Jute Fabric
- Jute Rope Filling
- 100% Natural, Renewable, Biodegradable & Recyclable
- Help Sustain the Planet’s Resources
- Inspired & Designed in Australia
- Handcrafted in India
Jute is a plant fiber. It is probably the strongest natural fiber. It resists moisture. In the early 1800s it was used to make children’s toys. 200 years later, we are using them for our pet toys.
Now for the test…
As you can see, it frays easily (I had to vacuum frequently) so you’ll have to make sure you monitor play time when they are chewing on this toy so that they don’t try to swallow the strands (Kicho tries to do this… I sometimes call her the “furry vacuum”}. In the short amount of time, Sumo has already chewed off the top layer of the fabric and is trying to rip apart the filling. It has been keeping him busy though but I doubt it will last the night. At about $6.39 for the 6” version, it is a bit expensive for one day of play. When I ordered it, I was optimistic and was hoping that it would last at least a week.
Keep in mind, this also depends on how aggressive a chewer your dog is. My dog is Mr. Destructo so most toys don’t tend to last more than a few days… unfortunately… Sigh.
Overall, not a bad toy for light to medium chewers. Sumo and Kicho love to taunt each other with the toy and do their kill moves on it.
UPDATE:

Sumo had gotten sick yesterday and I wasn’t sure if it was because of this toy since pieces of it were flying around everywhere and he could of swallowed some of it. He’s better today but he’s been crying for the toy (I had it hidden and he found it!) so I’m monitoring his play time this morning. He does loves this new toy though and can’t stop chewing on it. I didn’t think it would last as long but as you can see, it’s still going on pretty strong. However, I don’t like how the toy frays so much and pieces get everywhere. If your dog tends to swallow everything in sight, I would not recommend this since it might make your puppy sick. I’ll update again later.
FINAL UPDATE - September 24, 2009

I’ve decided that this would not be a suitable toy for my dogs. It frayed so much that I don’t feel comfortable letting them to play with it for fear of choking on the pieces by accident. Kicho loves to eat everything in sight and she swallowed one of these pieces when I wasn’t looking and started hacking it back up.
